New Zealand

Where to begin? Choosing a path and program

How can I understand where to start?

Fill out our application form. It is important to answer all the questions in as much detail as possible, because each case is individual, and in order to find the optimal path, we need to know your background.

I do not want to study! It would be more convenient for me to go on a work visa. How can I do that?

You can get a work visa only if you have a Job Offer, which is not so easy to get remotely. If you already have a job offer, then we advise you to consult with our Kiwi Immigration lawyer for further steps.

To hire a foreign citizen, the employer must prove that there is no suitable specialist among locals, and this is a very time-consuming process. Employers prefer to take those who already have a work visa. That is why many people choose to come to NZ through training since after that there is the possibility of obtaining a work visa for a year or more.

Who are the specialists in demand?

The specialists in demand include those whose qualification is on the Long Term Skill Shortage List.

In addition to the coincidence of the name of your qualification with the name from the list, it is important that other requirements from the Immigration New Zealand website are met. For a realistic assessment of your chances, contact our Kiwi Immigration advisor.

I have an in-demand speciality, I found it in the lists. What advantages does it give me?

New Zealand is open to professionals of all specialities but being on the list means it will be easier to find a job.

If you meet all of the requirements on the list, you may consider looking for a job in the country while taking an English course. In your case, the employer will not have to prove why they are hiring a foreign specialist.

I already have an education, and I am already 35 years old. I did not plan to continue my studies. My main goal is immigration. Is it obligatory to study in my case?

According to the official information on the Immigration New Zealand website, to obtain residency, you need to score 160 points. You can read more about this on our website.

A job offer gives about 50 points, which is almost impossible to obtain remotely. That is why the easiest way to get a job is to study. After a year of study, you can get a work visa, which will allow you to look for a job. Age is not a hindrance, you can study in New Zealand at any age.

I am considering studying in New Zealand followed by immigration. How can I choose a program and how long do I need to study?

To choose a field of study, you must take into account your previous work experience or qualification. Training usually takes one year. You can choose programs lasting 1.5 and 2 years, but it often depends on your goals and financial capabilities.

It is undesirable to choose an area that is unfamiliar to you since there can be difficulties in finding a job after training due to the lack of experience. Moreover, you will face problems in obtaining a student visa. The immigration officer will not deal with the reason for choosing a completely new field of study and, for sure, will decline a visa application. Our managers can help you with the program choice.

Can you explain step by step the whole process from the moment of contacting you to my arrival in New Zealand?
  • You need to fill out an application form. It will help us study your case in detail.
  • Next, we will decide on a strategy and choose a program. Immediately after, you can start collecting visa documents.
  • As soon as you collect the documents, and the institute sends us an invitation to study, you can apply for a visa.
  • After receiving preliminary approval, you pay for the tuition and receive a student visa to New Zealand.
  • We organise a free airport pick-up, give you a SIM card and a socket adapter and take you to your accommodation.
I am offered a job in New Zealand, so I plan to come immediately on a work visa. Who can I contact for help in obtaining a work visa?

The Kiwi Education project is focused on consulting on student visas. For work and other types of visas, you can use the advice of specialists from our Kiwi Immigration project. The cost of a consultation is NZ $ 200. You can find other services by following the link.

Do you have any kind of support after a student comes to New Zealand? Can I contact you if I need any help?

We support all new arrivals: we meet them free of charge at the airport, give them an adapter for sockets and a SIM card. We can find accommodation for you and tell you how to open a bank account.

Where else can I find information about New Zealand to help me plan my move and make my final decision?

Education in New Zealand

When is it possible to start diploma programmes and language courses?

There are usually intakes in February and July. In private institutes, they can start more often. English courses start every Monday.

Why do the prices differ so much? There are programs for NZ$ 10,000 and there are similar ones for NZ$ 30,000. What’s the difference?

The cost of education depends on the type of education provider. There are three of them: universities, state institutes (polytechnics) and private institutes. For more information, see here.

Universities are the most expensive and the requirements are high, but the given knowledge is also at the appropriate level. Similar courses in private institutes are much more affordable, but it should be understood that low tuition fees influence teaching staff and other conditions.

State institutes are the middle way, you can get a good-quality education for a reasonable cost.

How to enrol on a programme? Do I have to take any exams?

You don’t have to take any exams except submitting a certificate of any international English test (IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE, etc.) Sometimes it’s necessary to provide other documents. For more information, apply to our managers.

What are credits?

They are some kind of points given for each subject (15-30 credits). To get a diploma of a certain level it’s necessary to score a fixed quantity of credits. If it is a 1-year programme there are 120 credits, if it’s a 2-year programme there are 240 credits and so on.

I don't know English at all, can I go to language courses in New Zealand?

The language of tuition in NZ is English. That’s why you’d better study the basis of English at home to understand everyday phrases and feel more confident during the lessons. For more information about language courses and our tips, see our website.

How much do language courses cost? How long do they last?

The cost can vary from NZ$ 120 to 450 a week depending on the school category and the duration. The longer period of study the more discount you can have. You can choose the duration and a start date yourself. We advise studying for 6 months (24 weeks) if you have a basic level of English. If you estimate your knowledge as intermediate, 6 months are also optimum, 14 weeks are minimum.

Where can I take IELTS to enrol on a programme? Can I take an alternative test?

IELTS can be taken in any certified centre.

If you don’t like IELTS or it doesn’t suit you, you can take one of the other official tests, including PTE, TOEFL, CAE, etc.

I've chosen the programme and I'm going to apply directly to the institution. I’ll certainly have an extra discount because the institution won’t have to pay any commission for me.

It doesn’t matter how you will apply, the cost will be the same. It’s the policy of institutions. More likely you’ll have a discount if you apply with the help of Kiwi Education. Besides this, we help to attain a student visa and our work is free in 90% of all the cases.

Can I put off the start date if my plans changed after applying for a visa?

To postpone studying is possible before and after applying for a visa. But there is a possibility that it will lead to additional expenses because you’ll have to update some of the documents.

I'm an economist/ a manager/ an accountant/ etc., but I always wanted to be a cook/ a gardener/ a programmer. Can I retrain in New Zealand?

If you want to change the profession radically, you’ll have to study from the beginning, so the duration will increase to at least 2 years. Thus, it’s important to understand that the drastic change in it will likely raise questions from an immigration officer.

Therefore, think about possible proof of your interest in the new sphere. There can be some courses, contests if you did it as a hobby. It can increase your chances of obtaining a visa.

I want to study any qualification in demand, because I'm a manager/ an economist/ a marketer/ etc. and I won’t be able to find a job.

If the occupation is in the skill shortage lists it means that it’s easier to find a job. But it doesn’t mean all other specialists will be unemployed. It’s really important to find the most logical way and the chances to obtain a visa will increase.

Are there any cases when it’s impossible to assess a diploma? What to do in this situation?

Anyway, NZQA will give you a certificate on your diploma qualification according to the New Zealand educational system. As a rule, it takes about 1 or 1,5 year.

To hire a foreign citizen, the employer must prove that there is no suitable specialist among the local population and obtain a special permit from the government (Labor Market Impact Assessment), which is a very time-consuming process. Employers prefer to take those who already have a work visa. That is why many people choose to come to Canada through training since after that there is the possibility of obtaining a work visa for a year or more.

Who are the specialists in demand?

In some provincial immigration programs, there are lists of in-demand specialists – those who are needed by the region’s economy at the moment. These lists may change depending on the filling of the demand for certain professions, therefore, you should regularly check the information on the official websites of the provincial immigration ministries. As for federal immigration programs, there are no certain professions important for them. But the level according to the National Classifier of Occupations (NOC) matters.

I have an in-demand speciality, I found it in the lists. What advantages does it give me?

This means that you are already fulfilling one of the requirements of the immigration program. It also speaks of high chances of finding a job locally or even remotely (depends on the profession) if you have good English.

I already have an education, and I am already 35 years old. I did not plan to continue my studies. My main goal is immigration. Is it obligatory to study in my case?

Immigration after 35 years old is complicated by a decrease in age points for passing the Express Entry selection.

Having a job offer from an employer in Canada can give additional 50 or 200 points (depending on the level of the vacancy), but getting it remotely (from outside Canada) is very difficult and unlikely.
That is why the easiest way to get a job is to study. After a year of study, you can obtain a work permit, which will allow you to start looking for a job. Age is not a hindrance, you can study in Canada at any age.

Education in Canada

When is it possible to start diploma programmes and language courses?

The cost of education depends on the type of education provider. There are universities, institutes of technology and private colleges.

Universities are the most expensive and the requirements are high, but the given knowledge is also at the appropriate level. Similar courses in private colleges are much more affordable, but it should be understood that low tuition fees influence teaching staff and other conditions.

Institutes of technology are the middle way, you can get a good-quality education for a reasonable cost.

Spouses can apply for a visitor or work visa, children – for a student visa.

Qualifications assessment

Are diplomas from Russia and other CIS countries recognised in Canada?

At the moment, diplomas from the CIS countries are not recognised.

What if my diploma is not recognised?

There is a procedure for evaluating diplomas in the Canadian education system, which is carried out by various organizations accredited by the Department of Immigration Canada. The most popular organization is WES (World Education Services). The process takes about 30-90 days and will cost you about CAD $ 350.

A complete list of organizations can be found here.

Is it obligatory to assess a diploma before getting a student visa?

There is no such requirement for applying for a study permit. However, the visa officer can request it at his own discretion. Evaluation of the diploma may be required by the university for admission. Therefore, it is necessary to look at the requirements of specific programs.

Your personal manager will help you figure it out.

Does it ever happen that a diploma cannot be confirmed? What to do in this case?

In Canada, there is no such thing as “confirmation” of a diploma. Government-authorised organizations assess the compliance of the received foreign education with the Canadian one. If, in the opinion of this organization, the education received cannot be accepted by the immigration authorities, then the final report will indicate the level of education indicated in the foreign diploma, and in the line “Canadian equivalent” it will be written that this level of education either does not correspond to the Canadian one, or education received at an educational institution not recognized by Canada (if, for example, it was a private institution without state accreditation).

Residency

If I study in Canada, when will I be able to get residency?

It depends on the chosen immigration program. In any case, you first need to obtain a document confirming the completion of your studies in Canada and then, not always, but in most cases, work for 12 months. Only then you can apply for Permanent Resident status under one of the immigration programs. Thus, most likely the fastest time you can become a permanent resident is 24 months after graduation.

Our Canadian Immigration Consultants will be happy to assist with all residency application issues.

Can I quit the programme and apply for residence if I find a job while studying?

No, such a scenario is impossible. Immediately, only having received a job, you cannot apply for a residence. If you follow the path of immigration through study, then first you will need to gain a minimum work experience in Canada (12 months), and only after that, you will have the opportunity to apply for a change of status through a provincial or federal immigration program, depending on your situation.

Can I have a job in a sphere different from my Canadian diploma when I apply for residence?

The answer is yes, you can work without a Canadian diploma. However, you will need to look at the specific requirements of the immigration program for which you intend to immigrate. A small number of provincial programs directly require a candidate to work in the profession according to their Canadian diploma.

What should my partner and kids do when I get the residence? Can they count on the residence?

If you receive permanent resident status in Canada, your spouse and all dependent family members (dependent children under 22 years of age) who are listed on your immigration forms when you apply for immigration will receive the same status with you.

Where to begin. Choosing a path and program

How should I start?

Fill out our application form. It is important to answer all the questions in as much detail as possible because each case is individual, and in order to find the optimal path, we need to know your background.

I do not want to study! It would be more convenient for me to go on a work visa. How can I do that?

You can get a work visa only if you have a Job Offer, which is not easy to get remotely. If you already have a job offer, then we advise you to consult with our Kiwi Immigration lawyer for further steps.

To hire a foreign citizen, the employer must prove that there is no suitable specialist among locals, and this is a very time-consuming process. Employers prefer to take those who already have a work visa. That is why many people choose to come to the UK through training since there is a possibility of obtaining a work visa for a year or more afterwards.

What types of specialists are in-demand?

The specialists in-demand are designated by the UK government in a list that changes twice a year. According to the government, these are the specialists that the country needs at the moment. A separate list exists for Scotland. Skilled Worker visa: shortage occupations.

I have an in-demand speciality, I found it on the lists. What advantages does this give me?

The United Kingdom is open to professionals of all specialities, but being on the list means it will be easier to find a job.

If you meet all of the requirements on the list, you may consider looking for a job in the country while taking an English course. In your case, the employer will not have to explain why they are hiring a foreign specialist.

I already have an education, and I am already 35 years old. I did not plan to continue my studies. My main goal is immigration. Is it obligatory to study in my case?

In the UK, there are no age restrictions for study, but the visa officer will want to know why you suddenly decided to study again at 35 years old. However, in July 2021, the UK will change the immigration rules, which will allow every graduate of university programs to work or look for work for two years. This will allow you to get a very prestigious education, confirm your qualifications and get local experience. Immigration through studying at university remains the most reliable path to immigration at the moment.

I am considering studying in the United Kingdom and then immigrating. How do I choose a program and how long do I need to study?

To choose a field of study, you must take your previous work experience or qualifications into account. Training usually takes one year. You can choose programs lasting 1.5 and 2 years, but it often depends on your goals and financial ability.

Choosing an unfamiliar subject is undesirable since it can be hard to find a job after training due to the lack of experience. Moreover, you will face problems obtaining a student visa. The immigration officer won’t care about your reason for choosing a completely new field of study and will definitely decline a visa application. Our managers can help you with the program choice.

I do not want to study! It would be more convenient for me to go on a work visa. How can I do that?

You can only get a work visa if you already have an invitation from your employer. There are 2 main types of work permits: General Work Permit and Critical Skills Work Permit. The second permit refers to professions who are currently included on the list of in-demand professions in Ireland. As of April 2021, these are engineers, scientists, nurses, doctors, architects, financiers, project managers, IT specialists, marketers, designers and others. The main difference from the general work permit is that the employer does not need to prove that it was not possible to find a suitable candidate throughout the European Union for this position. It is forbidden to issue work permits for some professions, mainly low-skilled ones. These are nannies, cleaners, waiters, beauty salon workers, hotel managers, salespeople, social workers, psychotherapists, fitness instructors and others.

What specialists are in demand?

The specialists in demand are listed by the Irish government on the Critical Skills Occupations List, which changes from time to time. According to the government, these are the specialists that the country needs at the moment.

I have an in-demand speciality, I found it on the lists. What advantages does this give me?

An in-demand speciality allows you to reduce the time and resources you need to find a job and helps with obtaining a work visa. But even if your profession is not in-demand, you can still apply for a work permit and visa.

I already have an education, and I am already 35 years old. I did not plan to continue my studies. My main goal is immigration. Is studying obligatory in my case?

In Ireland, there are no age restrictions for study, but, of course, the visa officer will want to know why you suddenly decided to start studying again at 35 years old. Studying at a university will help your job search. Graduates in some specialities never look for work related to it and do not put it on their resume, they already have jobs lined up upon completing university. This is especially true for engineers, IT specialists and biochemists. Studying will not only allow you to get a very prestigious education and confirm your qualifications, but will also get you local experience. After graduation, you will be able to stay in the country for 1-2 years to work. Immigration through studying at university remains the surest way to immigrate at the moment.

I am considering studying in Ireland followed by immigration. How do I choose a program and how long do I need to study?

Opening an account in Ireland remotely is quite problematic.
To open a bank account, you need proof of your Irish address. You can provide bills in your name sent to an address in Ireland.

What currency should I show in the account?

You can keep your money in your accounts in any currency. An officer will recalculate funds at current rates.

What expenses will I have to pay before the tuition fee?

Insurance, visa fees, English exam and having documents translated are the main expenses.

How much do I really need to live in Ireland?

For a better understanding, read our article “The cost of living”. We hope it is helpful.

Moving with a partner and children

Can my partner get a visa if I move with my family? What kind of visa?

Ireland does not provide visas for student partners. Sometimes the embassy issues partner visas to partners of PhD students. But this is an exception to the rule. Typically, the student’s family members must have their own reasons for staying in Ireland (study, work).

If I go with my family, how much should I pay for my children's school?

Schooling for one child starts at €20,000 per year.

Qualifications assessment and residence

Are diplomas from my country recognised in Ireland?

Yes.

If I study in Ireland, when will I be able to get residence?

After studying at a university, graduates of bachelor’s programs and above are eligible to apply for a graduate work visa for a period of 1 year. Graduates of master’s and higher programs can extend this visa once for another 1 year if they have not been able to find a job. On a work visa, you need to work for 5 years in order to be able to apply for permanent residence or citizenship.

Can I quit the program and apply for residence if I find a job while studying?

Yes, but the university will not return your tuition fees, so it would be better to finish your studies and then look for a job on a graduate work visa.

Can I have a job in a career that is different from my Irish diploma when I apply for residence?

Yes, it is possible, although not entirely consistent.

What should my partner and children do when I get the residence? Can they count on the residence?

A partner and children can join you.
