Duolingo is a U.S.-based EdTech company launched in 2011. It offers free and user-friendly language learning through a gamified app available on iOS, Android, and web platforms. In 2016, Duolingo introduced the standardized online Duolingo English Test (DET), which has since become an alternative to traditional tests such as TOEFL and IELTS.
Duolingo English Test Format
The Duolingo English Test is based on the principle of adaptive computer testing. This means that tasks adjust to the candidate’s proficiency level: the better the answers, the more challenging the questions become. Each exam is unique, as the sequence of tasks is generated individually.

Duolingo English Test Scoring System
DET results are reported on a scale from 10 to 160 points, in 5-point increments. Scores reflect overall English proficiency and are divided into four main levels:
10–55 points — Beginner level, limited understanding of simple expressions and phrases.
60–85 points — Basic level, ability to handle everyday communication.
90–115 points — Intermediate level, confident use of English in academic and daily situations.
120–160 points — Advanced level, comparable to IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 95+.
In addition to the overall score, candidates receive subscores in four key competencies:
Literacy (Reading + Writing)
Comprehension (Listening + Reading)
Conversation (Speaking + Listening)
Production (Speaking + Writing)
This system allows universities and employers to assess not only the overall proficiency but also the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses across different aspects of language use.

Universities
Many universities in New Zealand (including Otago, Massey, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Waikato, Lincoln University, and others) accept the DET certificate with a score equivalent to the IELTS requirement for admission — usually around 110–120 points.
You can check which universities accept DET here (be sure to specify your study program when applying filters).
Student Visa
Official proof of English proficiency is required for admission and for obtaining an offer from a university, which is then submitted with your student visa application.
However, if you have further immigration plans — for example, applying for residency — you will need to take a different test. Typically, this means IELTS Academic/General, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT, as these are the exams officially recognized by New Zealand immigration authorities.
Therefore, DET can be considered a first step for study purposes, but for immigration you will still need to take one of the “classic” tests.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Duolingo English Test (DET)
How many times can I take the test? Up to 3 times within 30 days. A new attempt can only be purchased and taken after receiving the results of the previous test.
What does the result/certificate look like? An electronic certificate with your photo, overall score (10–160), and subscores in four skills (Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, Production). Universities also receive video and written samples, allowing them to see your real English.
How can I prepare for the test? Free practice tasks and a “quick test” are available on the Duolingo website, along with training in the app, essay writing, and speaking practice. No special cramming is required.
We recommend completing the free practice modules on the official Duolingo website — they help you get familiar with the format and improve your speed. This is especially useful for those with an already high level of English, as additional lessons may not be necessary.
How much does the test cost? From USD 59 per attempt (paid online, with most cards accepted).
How long are the results valid? The certificate is valid for 2 years from the test date.
How effective is the test? It is recognized by more than 4,000 universities worldwide, convenient, and fast (results within 2 days, or as little as 12 hours with the expedited option). While it is less in-depth than IELTS/TOEFL, it is suitable for most academic purposes.
The Duolingo English Test is a convenient, fast, and affordable way to prove your English proficiency for admission to New Zealand universities (just make sure your chosen university accepts this exam).
