Buying essentials for life in New Zealand

Household goods

When it comes to buying furniture, home decor, and everyday household items, we recommend starting with Kmart and The Warehouse. Both are budget-friendly stores, but you can still find interesting designs and a good price-to-quality ratio there.

A wide range of kitchenware and household goods can be found at the popular New Zealand store chain Briscoes. We recommend waiting for their sales, which happen several times a year — during those periods, you can get items with discounts of 50–70%. To stay updated, subscribe to their newsletter.

Trade Me is New Zealand’s largest online marketplace. It offers both new and second-hand items, and you can furnish your home, buy a car, or find appliances at a low cost.

You can also check out Facebook Marketplace, which is steadily growing in popularity.

Another option for those looking to save money is the Cash Converters chain of second-hand stores. Everything sold there has been tested and comes with a warranty (usually 3 months).

At Save Mart, Red Cross, and Salvation Army stores, you can find second-hand furniture, household items, and clothing.

Electronics

These are the biggest and most trusted nationwide chains:

  • Noel Leeming offers a wide range of electronics, including laptops, TVs, phones, appliances, and accessories. Frequent sales.
  • PB Tech especially popular for computer parts, laptops, IT gear, and phones. One of the best for tech enthusiasts and often cheaper than competitors.
  • JB Hi-Fi sells electronics, audio equipment, gaming gear, and appliances. Known for good deals and a wide product range.
  • Harvey Norman offers electronics, furniture, and home appliances. Usually has showrooms across major cities.

Specialists or online stores

  • Mighty Ape great for gaming, small gadgets, accessories, and fast shipping.
  • Computer Loungeh high-end PC components, custom builds, and accessories. Great for gamers and creatives.
  • 1-day online outlet-style store with limited-time deals on electronics and household items.

You may also look for electronic goods on TradeMe, Facebook Marketplace and Warehouse.

Outlet stores

In Auckland and Christchurch you’ll find the large Dress Smart outlet, which offers great deals on clothing and footwear.

At the Bed Bath & Beyond outlet (Auckland), you can find discounted bed linens, towels, and other quality home textiles.

Don’t forget to check out online outlet stores such as 1-day, TheMarket, and NZSALE for more deals.
