Upskilling and Immigration to New Zealand for Farmers with Education and Experience in Agriculture
For those who already have education and/or experience in agriculture — whether from the perspective of science and technology, or from management and operational work — there are upskilling programs that also lead to work visas and further employment opportunities.
Postgraduate Diploma (Level 8)
These are one-year programs that provide the same one-year work visa after completion. Following graduation, you need to work for 2 years to gain enough points for the Skilled Migrant Category. The cost of these programs is around NZ$42,000, excluding possible discounts.
Examples of programs:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Science — Focus on livestock science.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Horticultural Science — Focus on horticultural science.
Master’s Degree (Level 9)
The best choice for experienced professionals. These programs last 1 to 1.5 years and cover various areas of agriculture. They lead to 3-year work visas and also allow you to bring your partner (husband or wife) on a work visa right from the start of your studies. School-age children can attend New Zealand schools for free on this basis. After graduation, you only need to work for 1 year to become eligible for residency through the Skilled Migrant Category. The cost of the programs is around NZ$57,000–63,000, excluding possible discounts.
Examples of programs:
- Master of Environment and Agriculture — Agriculture and the environment
- Master of Management in Agribusiness — Agribusiness management
- Master of Precision Agriculture — Modern technologies in agriculture
