Purpose
This scholarship helps international students who are intending to study for a Bachelor’s degree to join Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s international student community.
This is a partial fee-based scholarship that will go towards tuition fees for one year of study. It is designed for new international students who are entering their first year of a Bachelor’s degree programme and studying full-time on campus. Holders must demonstrate their academic potential, as demonstrated by their admission into a Victoria University of Wellington programme.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be:
- International students who are paying full international fees; and
- Intending to study towards a Bachelor’s degree at Victoria University of Wellington; and
- A holder of an unconditional or conditional Offer of Place for a Bachelor’s degree at Victoria University of Wellington; and
- New students to Victoria University of Wellington.
For the avoidance of doubt, this scholarship is open to students who are completing or have recently completed:
- Victoria University of Wellington’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme; or
- Victoria University of Wellington’s Foundation Studies programme.
Students are not eligible for this scholarship if they:

- are a Study Abroad or Exchange student or a Twinning student from one of our overseas partner universities; or
- have received credit transfer from a previous qualification, also known as advanced standing or recognition of prior learning; or
- are sponsored by their home Government, or the New Zealand Government; or
- are Australian or New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or resident visa holders, or on a diplomatic visa entitled to domestic status.
Selection process
A scholarship application is not required. Students will be assessed for their eligibility for a scholarship on application for their programme. Recipients will be advised if they have been offered the scholarship in their Offer of Place.
Regulations and conditions
- The value of the scholarship is NZ$15,000.
- The scholarship applies for one year of study only, for a student’s first enrolment in that programme.
- Payment of the scholarship will be made as a credit towards tuition fees only. The scholarship is applied directly to the tuition fees upfront, allowing students to pay the reduced amount to the University.
- The scholarship will only be formally awarded once. While an applicant may apply for multiple programmes and receive multiple Offer of Place notifications confirming their acceptance and provisional scholarship eligibility for those programmes, only one scholarship will be formally awarded per student. The scholarship will be formally awarded once the applicant has enrolled in their first-year courses.
- Recipients who subsequently withdraw from study after the scholarship has been formally awarded may be required to pay back some or all of the scholarship value at the University’s discretion.
- Recipients may request approval to defer this scholarship to another intake within the same calendar year. This scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- This scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships, as long as this is permitted within the regulations of the other scholarship(s).
- This scholarship is for international students. If a student’s fee status changes from international to domestic fees before the scholarship is credited to their account, the scholarship will be withdrawn. If a student’s residency status changes from international to domestic at any stage during the tenure of the scholarship, the University may suspend or terminate the scholarship and require the return of funds either in part or in full at the University’s discretion.
- This scholarship will not appear on the recipient’s academic transcript.
