Nataliya about Otago Polytechnic, Auckland

Nataliya from Russia is telling about her experience of moving to New Zealand with her husband and children. And speaks about Otago university master’s degree program (level 9).

Choosing a country and a program

Studying in the Master of Applied Management (Business Management) program at Otago Polytechnic (Auckland International Campus) was the result of our decision to choose New Zealand over our initial option – Canada.

Our manager from Kiwi Education, Kseniya, was a reliable guide throughout the process. She offered various Level 9 programs. I’m very grateful for her honesty and professional support.

Especially given the complexities of my case. For instance, I already had PhD, there was a mismatch between my previous education and work experience. And we needed to apply for visas for the whole family.

We chose Otago Polytechnic because it offers a good balance between the cost and quality of education, and it’s located in Auckland, where my partner has better job opportunities.

Studying

The program lasts 1.5 years and focuses on the practical aspects of management and developing analytical skills. Each semester, students study two subjects. And for each subject they need to complete two assignments. There are about 20 students in the group. Classes are held three times a week: two half-days and one full day. During their studies, students are allowed to work part-time up to 20 hours per week.

Attendance is monitored closely, including tardiness. After completing the program, graduates are eligible for a 3-year post-study work visa, as are their partners.

Studying requires a significant amount of independent work, and I wouldn’t say it’s easy. Lecturers are different. Some of them are inspiring and supportive, while others may be indifferent. However, in any case, it’s up to the student to take responsibility and put in the effort.

One of the advantages of Otago Polytechnic is the career support it provides. This includes networking events with industry professionals, resume and LinkedIn profile consultations, and interview preparation. Moreover, there is an opportunity to publish your academic papers in a peer-reviewed journal.

At Level 9, after completing a couple of course blocks, students can choose one of three options:

  • continue with coursework (two projects per subject per semester),
  • write a research thesis,
  • or complete a professional project.

The latter two involve more independent work and fewer on-campus sessions. This flexibility allows students to better balance work and study.

General impression

It’s important to understand that New Zealand is an expensive destination. So, the sooner you can start working, the easier it is to settle in. A master’s program allows the student’s partner to get an open work visa. And in my opinion, this provides significantly better chances of finding qualified employment than job hunting from abroad. Additionally, English skills improve rapidly through full immersion in the environment. Children also gain access to free education in local schools.

So, ultimately, this is an investment not just in education, but in the smooth immigration of the entire family.

From my experience, visa processing times can vary. If you’re relocating with young children, I recommend planning your flights carefully in case the student has to travel for study before the rest of the family receives their visas.
